Caring for Babies Born During the Conflict in Sudan

As the conflict in Sudan continues, mothers are giving birth to their children in the darkest of times. Amira Jalab had to witness the conflict firsthand while she was expecting triplets.

Although she experienced the loss of two of her three babies, she also experienced love and kindness at the Samaritan’s Purse Emergency Field Hospital. Please continue to pray for the families looking for a light shining in darkness as this conflict continues and for their DART team, who is tirelessly serving in Jesus’ Name in Sudan.

Our presence here is a miracle. Walking a mama down into a building where I know she’s going to have loving hands placed on her while she’s birthing. Just an amazing opportunity to love them. Unfortunately, Sudan has been experiencing a massive conflict. Food shortages. Hunger going on. Crimes against women as far as sexual assaults that are happening.

Amira Jalab – Mother
They came at night. They raped our daughters and often took the girls and robbed us. This is why I decided to bring my children here.

Maria
We live in a broken world. But there are moments of joy when you hear that cry, that cry of life.

Amira
I gave birth to triplets in another hospital. Four days later when the children were in the nursery I received a phone call at 8:30am. One of the babies needed oxygen. An hour and later he passed away.

This mom brought in her two babies out of a set of triplets, and they were very unwell. And she was afraid that they were going to die. So she came to us for help, even in the suffering and the unhappy moments, is just an opportunity to love them the way Jesus would. It’s such a blessing that we had, built this warmer. And then they were so cold and we were able to stabilize them, get them warm, and, get the babies fed, help them gain some weight.

And then we’ve been working with mom to build up her milk supply.

Amira
They have taken care of my babies and provided milk for them. That is why their health is improving

Maria
A lot of these women are birthing children and having other children in another location that still need cared for. Being able to be here to hold those little ones when she can’t, and pray the Spirit of Jesus over them just whisper in their ear that they’ve loved specifically by Jesus, that that He loves them deeply.

Amira
I always prayed for children. Of course I am afraid for them. I am thankful for the peace I now have here at this hospital. By God, their treatment is so good that makes you feel as if you are with your family

Maria
Every mother hopes that their child’s life will be a little bit better than theirs was. I’m sure that they hope that there won’t be conflict if the mamas have experienced rape, that the daughter that they just birthed won’t ever experience that.

Being a mom, I think, is holding that hope as well for the future for our kids. It’s a dark time for Sudan and a really dark time in their personal lives to be able to leave an impression on them of love and kindness. We bring that solid comfort in a place where loss is felt almost daily. On those two weeks after being discharged, Amira returned.

Her two babies were readmitted with pertussis. Unfortunately, Ali passed away into the arms of Jesus almost two days later. No mother ever wants to have to say goodbye to a child. And now she’s lost two of the three triplets. But we want to be there in these moments. We want to walk through this with the mothers, showing them that Jesus knows exactly how they feel and cling to the God of all comfort.

Every life is precious, no matter how long they’re with us. So as you pray for Sudan, pray that they would see the beauty of Christ and the beauty of what he’s given here in Sudan.
