My name is Paulette Bleck. I am a Bible translator. I became a Christian through my husband. I was born into a Muslim family. I got to know my husband through an orchestra when we started to see each other my mother said to me ‘It seems that he is a Christian and if you want to marry him there is only one option: you must convert him.’
One day I told him ‘I aim going to try to convert you to Islam.’ And he said to me ‘I will do everything so that you will become a Christian.’ He said to me that when you have doubts you should pray that God will reveal Himself to you. And every time that I was in a difficult situation when I prayed it was answered and I had peace of heart. So I became a Christian.
Converting at the age of 19 is not easy. My parents decided to no longer pay my school fees and sometimes they ate without including me. And they said ‘You should go to the Christians for them to give you something to eat.’
As the persecution was too strong at home we decided to have a very simple wedding so we could be free. After I got married I didn’t see my mother and I didn’t hear any news of her. And she was someone who was everything for me. After seven years of prayer when I had my second daughter I named her after my mother.
My mother came to our house for the first time. Now our relationship is better. And God was gracious to us – in 2001 we started the first church where everything was translated into Wolof. I translate into Wolof for my husband when he preaches. He told me ‘Translation is a gift that is in you.’ So applied to be a translator for the Contemporary Wolof Bible Translation. We expect that where are unable to go as a church, the translation will be able to go. So people can understand the word of God. That’s my story.
