World Vision – one of the world’s largest children’s charities that has operated in Myanmar for 30 years – has launched an emergency response to urgently help children affected by the devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake.
SCRIPT:
The death toll following the devastating 7.7 magnitude Myanmar earthquake has now surpassed 3,000.
A major concern is the safety of children as they become separated from parents or care-givers.
In response Christian charity World Vision has launched an emergency response to help at least 500,000 people with life-saving essentials as well as ensuring safety and protection for the most vulnerable, especially women and children.
Speaking from the one of the worst-hit areas in the Mandalay region is World Vision Myanmar National Director Dr Kyi Minn:
I’m now at the epicenter in Mandalay where the earthquake started and you can see the infrastructure damage impacted many parts of the effected area and we cannot pass through this district so it is quite difficult for us to bring in these supplies but we will find a way with different detours.
And the earthquake compounded an already dire humanitarian situation in Myanmar, where nearly 20 million people were already in need of humanitarian assistance across the country, including more than 3.5 million people who were already displaced from their homes.
