In 2007 Jamil’s life in Lebanon was falling apart. He was an alcoholic and after a big fight with his girlfriend, he felt like he had no hope and wanted to end his own life. But then he ran into a Christian friend who offered to pray for him.
He looks back on the miracle that began in his life at that very moment:
“Suddenly while he’s praying he said, ‘In Jesus’s name, God is telling you to take out the gun, the knife and the medicines from your bag. At that time, I felt like it’s not him talking. I felt a big power in this place. I fell down on the floor, and I cried and repented of every time I’d said, ‘There is no God.’ I felt like I died from the old person, and I live a new person again.”
Jamil immediately accepted Christ as his Savior. And his friend helped him travel to Egypt for six months of discipleship training. But when he returned he faced persecution from his own family who disowned him and even threatened his life:
“After I started going to an evangelical church …my dad kicked me out of the house. One time my dad took my Bible and he shredded it into many pieces. So all the family has denied relation with me.”
Despite enduring this and facing financial challenges, Jamil started a discipleship training school.
“I’m not just a believer, I’m also a missionary.”
And Christian Ministry Help The Persecuted has come alongside him to help him lead a life of dignity and independence. Through their Enduring Livelihood Ministry, they helped Jamil create a business plan and provided seed funding for a taxi and delivery business. He says it’s not only providing extra income for his wife and children, but also gives him many opportunities to share Jesus with his customers and employees:
“So, we share the Gospel with every guy who comes to our shop to deliver the stuff. We bring Muslim youth, one person every time. We ask them to help us in our business, and during helping we have lunch break, and on the last day we always share the gospel. And is his answer to the Bible is, ‘Yes,’ we baptise him, and he becomes one of us.”
Help The Persecuted is enabling many more believers like Jamil to establish their business through their Enduring Livelihoods Ministry, which not only provides persecuted believers with dignity and independence but also makes it possible for them to share the hope of Christ.
