Giving Purity Her First Wheelchair

Purity, an 8-year-old girl from Zambia lives with cerebral palsy. For years her mother Christine carried her on her back, navigating daily life without a wheelchair. But when Christian charity Joni and Friends held a Wheels for the World™ outreach in Zambia, life changed for Purity and her family.

In this report, Purity experiences the joy of sitting up and rolling into her future of greater opportunity and independence. Best of all, Purity’s family heard the Gospel and received a Bible, receiving hope that will last for eternity.

My name is Christine Phiri and my daughter is Purity Nsama. We are a family of four. Two daughters and my husband. My husband works as a gardener. I’m a full-time mum.

Purity has cerebral palsy. She truly is the most happy and precious little girl that you ever would meet. Her favorite colour is pink. And when you talk to her and hold her hand, you could tell that she really felt the love and the presence of everyone around her, which was beautiful.
Christine
When Purity was three months old, that’s when I discovered her disability. She was diagnosed with cerebral palsy from the time she was three months old. Up to now, eight years I’m the one carrying her. I had no means also to find a wheelchair for her. But if it’s the market I have to put her on my back. That was my challenge.
Amelia
Purity also has a younger sister, and her mum said she struggled to care for both of them because she was constantly carrying Purity around. And so having a wheelchair would truly be such a life changing experience for her.
Christine
This wheelchair will help a lot because anytime I want to take her to school I’ll be using the wheelchair. Going to church I’ll be using the wheelchair, even visiting other relatives.
Amelia
We were able to fit Purity with one of our special Hope Haven paediatric chairs. She was able to sit up to be able to interact with her environment, which is such a change because she was so used to her mum said just lying on the ground on a mat at home. She was able to receive the support that she needed from a physiotherapy perspective, which I think will really have huge benefits as she grows in the future.
Christine
These children were made in the image of God, so we have to love them and take care of them. When God gave us these children He knew that you give us strength and wisdom on how to take care of them, and we should love them too.
