Soiniwe’s mother buried him alive when he was born. He was rescued by a tribal leader, and years later became a Bible teacher, and built medical clinics for his Amazon tribe.
Soiniwe has written a book to share the miraculous story of his life.
SCRIPT:
VO: SOINIWE IS THE BIRTH NAME, IN THE SHIPIBO-CONIBO LANGUAGE OF THE AMAZON, GIVEN TO PASTOR ROGER MARQUEZ, WHO TELLS HIS STORY IN A BOOK BY THE SAME NAME, SOINIWE.
DR. ROGER MARQUEZ, SHIPIBO MISSIONARY: I was inspired to write this book to show what God has done in my life from birth to today, and God’s faithfulness in my life, as well as His grace and mercy. And to tell how God rescued me from certain death when my mother buried me alive.
VO: SOINIWE AND HIS family ARE DOING EVANGELISM AND SOCIAL WORK, WHILE PRESERVING AND PROMOTING THE SHIPIBO-CONIU CULTURE, ONE OF THE LARGEST PEOPLE GROUPS IN THE PERUVIAN AMAZON REGION.
ROGER MARQUEZ: In the 1960’s, the gospel had only recently come into our Shipibo communities, and in our community, there was no church. But a Shipibo woman had studied, along with her husband, in a Bible institute where they became professors, and they came to my community.
That lady, Dorotea Gonzalez, told me about the love of God, and that He loved me just as I was. Then I remembered what my mother had done when I was born.
She had buried me alive, and a tribal ruler saved my life. I felt resentment toward my mother, so I asked God for forgiveness, to forgive me.
And then I gave my life to Jesus.
VO: SOINIWE STUDIED TO BE A PREACHER AND BIBLE TEACHER IN THE AMAZON REGION. HE ALSO RESPONDED TO THE MEDICAL NEEDS OF THE PEOPLE.
ROGER MARQUEZ: We have constructed three health centers, in three communities in different areas. How? First, the community itself must be willing to cut down the wood from the forest, to make boards for the framing of the structure. They also get sand out of the river to make a cement floor, and the community does the manual labor.
I look for and ask for offerings from our church family in Peru in order to help buy nails, corrugated roofing, and other building materials that we need.
VO: SOINIWE IS MAKING A DIFFERENCE AS A MISSIONARY CALLED TO TWO CULTURES AND IS ALSO CONTRIBUTING TO THE HISTORY OF THE AMAZON NATIONS IN PERU AND OTHER LATIN AMERICAN COUNTRIES.
