It’s not just the medical crew on board the world’s largest civilian hospital ship who have an impact on their patients.
Many of the skilled volunteers who serve in other roles on the Global Mercy play their part, including carpenter Will Ballantyne from the South of England.

The world’s largest civilian hospital ships recently docked in the port of Tema in the West African country of Ghana.
The volunteer crew onboard the Global Mercy run by Christian charity Mercy Ships will be there for the next ten months providing vital surgeries and dental procedures as well as giving medical training.
One of the crew members from the South of England Will Ballantyne serves as a carpenter.
He shares how God uses his skills to minister to their patients:
That’s one of the most pleasing aspects of the work is when we get into surgery particularly orthopaedic surgery for children. They sometimes require adjustments to their shoes. They have a leg length discrepancy, so we need to build up one shoe, so that their pelvis is stable. So it helps them through their rehabilitation program. For me it’s just a real privilege to be here to be able to add something to the ship and the work of Mercy Ships.
And the Global Mercy medical crew expect to complete over 2,500 free surgeries and over 2,000 free dental procedures during the next ten months.
