Providing Ebola Prevention Response to Vulnerable Children in the DRC

World Vision remains deeply concerned by the escalating Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), which has spread rapidly since it was declared on 15 May 2026. What began in the Mongbwalu health zone of Ituri Province has now expanded across seven provinces, affecting 60 health zones and resulting in more than 6,300 confirmed cases with a reported 48.4% fatality rate.

GNA reporter Pete Wooding finds out how the charity is providing Ebola prevention programs to tens of thousands of vulnerable people.

As the Ebola crisis continues to impact many young lives in the Democratic Republic of Congo a Christian children’s charity is responding to some of the most difficult issues affecting children in their communities.
As part of World Vision’s Channels of Hope Programme they are partnering with churches and faith leaders to provide Ebola prevention awareness which includes using relevant Bible verses.
The charity’s David Munkley is their DRC Eastern Zone Director
It’s been a real success because we’ve again been able to create strong bonds to further strengthen existing bonds to ensure that tens of thousands of people throughout these effected communities are able to get again the information, access to water and sanitation. Despite the many difficulties it’s been a win as far as this epidemic that we’ve been able to empower these communities.
Munkey explains how they’re also mobilising Community Health Action Teams
That’s where people can really go door to door to really identify vulnerable children, vulnerable families and say what do they need. Are we providing hand-washing stations, are there certain water and sanitation kits, focussed on young children, young girls, young women to really ensure that when they encounter challenges health needs, water and sanitation needs that they are being provided for.
And in the longer term World Vision is planning to provide child friendly spaces for young people as well as tackle the issue of food insecurity.
