Christian Relief Agencies Feel the Bite of USAID Cuts

Christian relief agencies are being significantly impacted by the USAID cuts. World Relief says due to the unexpected termination of their agreement to resettle refugees and pause on foreign assistance funds for life-saving work, they now face a critical gap in supporting millions of families both in the U.S. and in fragile countries around the world.

GNA spoke to World Relief’s CEO Myal Greene to see how they are being impacted by these cuts.

US Aid cuts

Just a few months after the American Government officially removed US Aid – the US agency for International Development, many Christian relief organisations are already reeling from the effects of these cuts.

World Relief CEO Myal Greene shares how this has impacted their work in countries facing some of the worst humanitarian crises in the world:

Where we work we’ve had people effected in Sudan and Chad and Sudan faces the worst humanitarian crisis in the world. And we’ve seen availability of food reduced. We’ve seen processes to distribute food reduced. We’ve seen medical clinic interrupted. In DRC another significant humanitarian crisis conflict. The services and availability that we’ve been able to provide and serve has been stopped when the grant expired and it was not renewed because of the USAID funding cuts.

Greene says he is grateful that the Christian community in the US has generously stepped in to make up for some of the shortfall in funds:

Churches and Christians around the country have given sacrificially to meet the needs of vulnerable people. We’ve said this is a stand in the gap opportunity and we’ve seen people stand in the gap to meet those needs.

One of his greatest concern though is that we don’t turn our back on many persecuted Christians fleeing dangerous countries who have had their pathway to America cut off:

What I fear and see happening to often now is people especially the church turn their back on immigrants or politicians and leaders turn their back in immigrants. People who’ve fled are looking for some place to belong, looking for some place to be welcomed that you don’t belong with us, you don’t welcome us. But in face it’s Jesus who teaches us time and again to welcome the stranger.

And World Relief is calling on Christians to help fill that critical gap by speaking out on behalf of millions of families both in the U.S. and in fragile countries around the world.
