Training Rural Cambodian Families to Earn a Living Selling Goats

Training Rural Cambodian Families to Earn a Living Selling Goats

Employment is scarce in the Cambodian village of Kamrieng, with many residents migrating from the area in search of a means to earn a living. While the climate makes farming crops difficult, there is still a lucrative market for raising goats. Samaritan’s Purse is helping residents find a new, effective way to earn an income for their families by training them to raise and sell their goats ethically.

The goat program has brought a new, sustainable trade to the families of Kamrieng, while witnessing to each family about the Gospel of Jesus Christ and His provision that makes this program possible.

Barry Jessen – Samaritan’s Purse

Kamrieng is a very difficult place to earn a living. There’s no employment. And on top of that, the climate makes farming very difficult. Often people are left needing to migrate unsafely because they cannot afford a passport or leaving home to go and get work. Samaritan’s Purse came in to Kamrieg and looked at what natural resources were available that could introduce a new livelihood to the area.

There is food for goats, there’s space for goats, and there’s a market for goats. So we brought in a goat program.

El Sara – Beneficiary

Before getting the goats it was very difficult for my family. We couldn’t afford my children’s education things like paying debts. I didn’t know what to do.

Barry

The goats provide a relatively quick return for money. Within a short period of time a fully grown goat will set a market for anything from $90-120. Which for a lot of these farms is a full month’s income.

El Sara

I didn’t know who to rely on. I decided to pray to God.

Barry

The goat program is designed so that Samaritan’s Purse staff meet with the family multiple times throughout the period of the program each time being able to show the love of God, being able to listen to people, pray for people.

El Sara

God will give us hope. What I thought was difficult it faded away. I decided to believe in God ever since. Life is different than before

Barry

The Word of God lodges in people’s heart. And it’s the Holy Spirit through the gospel that changes people’s lives. Pray for our staff that they have the right word, the right Scripture, and it will grow when the Holy Spirit is ready.
