Edward Graham Visits Food and Water Programs in Kenya

Water is hard to come by in the hot and arid community of Malindi, Kenya. A local school did not have access to water because its only water pump had broken over nine years ago. Samaritan’s Purse was able to fix the school’s water pump.

However, this is just the beginning. Samaritan’s Purse has been donating baby goats to local families that can provide milk and additional income to struggling families across Malindi.

I’ve been in eastern Kenya today, visiting many of the projects at our Samaritan’s Purse office in Nairobi is responsible for. I’m along the coast just outside of a community called Malindi and is hot. And it’s dry here. Water is very hard to come by. And I’m at a school that had a pump that’s been broken for nine years, and Samaritan’s Purse has been able to come in and fix that well and provide at least water for sanitation needs.

But we’re also helping educate and train on how important is to have sanitation, to have bathrooms. And when they only have a couple of latrines for these kids to use. It’s unsafe and it’s unhealthy. And so Samaritan’s Purse partners with this school right here to provide more latrines. But we do all this because we want this community. We want these teachers and this administrator to know that Christ loves them.

Because we’re near the coast the water here and if you dug a well, would be all brackish and salt. You really can’t dig low enough. So Samaritan’s Purse has come in and will dig these holding tanks of water. And when the rainy season comes, this tank will fill up and help provide clean drinking water for over 11 villages.

And so this is a huge capability, a huge blessing to these villagers. I just met the committee. We select a committee, we come along and a pastor will be part of this, will minister to the village, we’ll share the Gospel and they’ll stay here and continue to plant churches. But it’s also about providing clean drinking water to this committee that didn’t have it before.

Every Christmas, Samaritan’s Purse has a Christmas catalog and one of the most popular items on there’s goats here in Kenya. I’ve been visiting a location where Samaritan’s Purse has come out and given the community goats where they’re breeding. It’s a better quality goat than it’s usually found in this area. They’re larger. This goat sustains this family with the needed milk to raise a little children, but also other income.

Because they raise them, they can sell them. That changes this community forever. I’m proud of the office. We have an unbelievable staff like we do all over the world, and I can’t thank them enough for the work they’re doing in the name of Jesus Christ.
