Imagine entering this ancient 11th century church building in North Wales this past Easter Sunday to encounter a very different kind of worship.

This was the first of its kind event that took place in St James Well Being Centre in the town of Holywell. As part of resurrection Sunday celebrations, the evening called from Grave to Rave, included Bible readings, prayers, a Gospel message as well as techno style worship songs.

Event organizer and local youth leader Jon Andrews gave his response to any critics concerned about mixing the cultures of clubland and church:

It was about reassuring people that it’s an act of worship as well. So I think some people were thinking it’s going to be secular clubland music, but this was very much worship music that had been remixed.

So what kind of impact did from the Grace to the Rave have on those who came?

There was a lot of people from church very churches from around the world to experience this different expression of worship. But we had a lot of people as well that don’t generally attend church and they came along because they wanted to see what it was all about. So I think we met that aim to be able to provide something that was accessible to church and non church people.

And Andrews is hoping to continue to organize more of these unique worship evenings in the coming months and years with the aim of reaching more unchurched people in his community.
